Specifically, this section:

The great majority of Canadians identify as Christians. The largest religious affiliation is Roman Catholic, followed by various Protestant churches. The numbers of Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, and members of other religions, as well as atheists, are also growing. In Canada the state has traditionally partnered with faith communities to promote social welfare, harmony and mutual respect; to provide schools and health care; to resettle refugees; and to uphold religious freedom and freedom of conscience.

It is illegal for an employer to hold your pay that they owe you because you quit without giving proper notice.

I called Normes du Travail and asked, but the lady on the other end was slightly unclear and I fear she didn't entirely understand what I was saying (she kept speaking french to me, I had to ask her three times to speak english so I could properly understand).
She said it's illegal and that they have to pay me, but I'm not sure she understood the part where I mentioned I quit without notice.

I quit due to personal reasons (psychological/verbal harassment from management and my only co-worker) and had no other choice.

Nov. 12th, 2009 @ 12:19 pm X-mas Gifts for Babies?
Current Mood: curious
Tags: , ,
My extended family has exploded with children over the last few years and now I have 15 children under the age of six that I'm shopping for. Because I'm hoping to eat during the month of December, I'm trying for handmade gifts this year.

OH YEAH, AND I CAN'T SEW. AT ALL.

Does anyone have any suggestions for non-sewn handmade gifts for young children?

I started by making some rhyming storybooks about some of the older ones. Then I wrote some lullabies for the youngest ones. It's the ones in the middle that are giving me the most problem (the 18 month/2 yr olds), since they're not quite ready for books, but a little too big for lullabies.

I was thinking of making some classic wooden blocks with personalized images woodburned on the sides but I'm not sure if wooden blocks will do more damage than good to small children.

Any help would be great! Thanks so much!

I'm trying to start up a side project and experimenting in ways to go about it. I decided to try my hand at solid granny squares, and seem to be doing something a tadbit wrong: It's puckering :( after the 3rd round, i fold it in half triangle style and it makes a chevron :/

I DC across, and do 3dc, ch3, 3dc in the corners. Should I just be doing 2dc-ch2-2dc like the afghan below me? or am I messing up somewhere else entirely?

Merci~

So, the story is, I bought rather a lot of eyelash yarn a long while ago to knit into scarves for a bunch of friends. The friends rather liked their furry, rather bright scarves, but I had ends left over. Lots of ends. And then I thought, 'hmm, perhaps I could knit these into squares and sew them into a blanket?' I tried and failed miserably. In the mean time, I was buying up more eyelash yarn to contribute to the failed project.

For months the eyelash yarn stash sat in the corner, mocking me with its dimensions (which grew even further over time - I'm *terrible* at not buying yarn) until, one day, I thought 'why don't I crochet it instead?'

And so the Big Gay Afghan project was born. It's a modified granny square (double crochet (UK treble) into every stitch along the length of each side, two doubles, two chain, two doubles into the two chain at each corner - simples!) At some point I lost the end of the round and have been working in a spiral ever since. It doesn't seem to have suffered and, when I make the cushion covers to go with, I'll make sure I do that deliberately again.

Pictures (and a bit more commentary) are at my journal

Nov. 12th, 2009 @ 06:56 am Adult bus tickets on a student card
Current Mood: tired
I have an Opus student card that expired last month that I cannot renew cause I'm too old now. I know I need to go and buy myself an Opus card so I can actually get a weekly pass next week, but I also know there were some bus tickets on the old Opus card (adult tickets)... Does anyone know if these are still accessible to me, or have they vanished into the ether of the STM's pockets? Do I just use them like I would normally use my pass for the next few days, until they run out, or can the the STM put them on my new adult OPUS card?

I didn't notice anything on the OPUS site, but then I'm so jetlagged today I wouldn't notice if my pants were on fire.

EDIT: It worked with adult tickets on an expired student opus card, in case anyone else ever needs to know this.

Bea's favourite columnist, originally uploaded by grammardog.

In rushed preparation for my hearing with the former landlord the other day, I dropped a sheaf of papers out of my filing cabinet onto the floor. Then the flu came, and I neglected to pick them up for several days. When I finally got around to it this morning, Bea appeared to have been lulled to sleep by the sweet tale of Peter Duffy, former columnist for The Chronicle Herald, in his no-really-it-happened-to-me article about a demon (probably a succubus) anally penetrating him in the night. Duffy is now a speechwriter for our city's mayor, natch.

Petite <3 pendants! Tiny and cute and just dorky enough for most of my girly friends. They're super simple to make too, except that I had to make the steel "<" symbol stamp first. Originally I was going to make earrings, but I hate making earrings hehe.

Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 12:37 pm Lest We Forget

After the Second World War, the veterans of the Canadian military were demobilized and sent home. In recognition for their contribution to the war effort, they were given money, access to enhanced education, and titles to pieces of land.

First Nations veterans, however, were treated differently. They received less money. In the majority of cases, they received land that belonged to the reserves on which they already lived. Most were not provided with increased access to education.

As Status Indians, they had rights to some of their reserve benefits as long as they returned to the reserve.

Except.

1. Fighting in the war had given them the right to vote
2. The right to vote cost them their Status designation.
3. Losing their status cost them reserve benefits.
4. The government refused them military service benefits because they were still considered to have Status rights.

What an absurd and insane Catch 22. More than 70 years after Canada declared war on Nazi Germany in 1939, hundreds of aboriginal veterans of the Second World War and Korean War are still seeking equal compensation for their service.

All the wreath-laying ceremonies in the world aren't going to fix this. Tell our government that we demand better.

Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 09:11 am Looking for computer software for making cross stitch patterns
Hello! I looked through the user info links and tried a journal search and didn't find anything, so here's hoping my journal search-fu isn't failing. I searched 'stitch computer program' 'stitch computer software' 'cross stitch computer' and the names of a few programs I'm thinking of buying, and it found nothing for any of them.

I'm currently making my own cross stitch patterns via photoshop, but it's rather time-consuming to make a really useable pattern. I've been looking into a good automatic cross stitch pattern making program. Unfortunately, most of the ones I find the free trial download either flat out doesn't work, or when I get it, it's not particularly good. I've noticed a real problem translating black in most programs I've tried- they try to make it dark green, or dark blue, so if you've already got that color in your image you can't tell what is supposed to be black and what isn't. Or else they make it far too pixelly, and there's no way you could tell what the original image was supposed to be.

So I'd like to know what people are using, how happy they are with it, and what some of the shortcomings are. I'm hoping not to spend more than 60, unless the best-best-everyone-loves program is more than that. I don't do machine embroidery, so I don't need a program that is capable of converting to machine embroidery patterns.

I've running on 32bit Windows Vista, but I'm upgrading to Windows 7 relatively soon. I'm finding most cross stitch making programs were last updated for XP, and then abandoned by their creators.

Thanks! I'm going to cross-post this to [info]stitchers as well.

Lady Gaga, are you seriously going to go and make me love you now? Is it just the fever talking?

I'm actually feeling somewhat human today. Although my head still feels like an inflamed boil that needs lancing, my throat has improved and I was neither shivering violently or sweating profusely when I woke up this morning. At the risk of appearing cocksure in the face of the swine flu pandemic, I've been reading about the Irish famines a bit, and it's making me feel very grateful to live in a time where a fever isn't basically the first stage of death.

Vaccination clinics are now open to those with chronic illness, so when I'm feeling better, I'll head there to get vaccinated just in case this wasn't it.

It's Remembrance Day in Canada today. We remember those who served and those who died in service for our country. I think it's a good day also to think of those who may never have served, but whose lives were impacted terribly by war, all the same.

Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 12:06 am okay, so this might be the strangest question ever asked here....
Where in Montreal can I find a regular issue of Playboy magazine?
The November issue features Marge Simpson on the cover and my fiance is a pretty big Simpsons fan, so this would be a pretty hilarious novelty item for him to have.
I've checked numerous Couche-Tards and deps in metro stations. All I can find are Hustlers and special issues of Playboy that aren't the regular, monthly issue.
I'm not exactly a porn magazine expert so, I'm at a bit of a loss here, haha.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 08:00 pm Just some questions concerning my job.
I just have a few questions that I can't seem to find on the Normes de travail Quebec website.

I've been working for this employer now for 3 months, and I have not received one payslip along with my pay since I've been working there, I've brought it up to her multiple times and she seems to ignore her and instead she threatens to fire me if I make a complaint to Normes de travail because I want my payslips, I've been looking around and haven't really found anything on her firing me because I want my payslips. I was just wondering if it is legal for her to 1) threaten to fire me for making a complaint about her and 2) actually firing me only because I want my pay slips

Another thing is that I couldn't find is the amount that she pays myself and another girl a week, we work almost 30-35 hours a week as junior hair stylists for her hair salon, also she gives us manager work to do during the week when she isn't there, and she refuses to pay us more than 100$ a week because she can't afford it right now, and she would keep on saying that she has the right to not pay us at all because we're junior stylists in training to become senior stylists, I was wondering is it true that she can legally do that? or does she have to pay us atleast minumn wage for the amount of hours that we work in a week? We're suppose to be working on a salary base job, so she says since the beginning we started to work. Also can she legally fire us for wanting an actual real paycheck? (yes she seems to threaten us alot with that whole "I'll fire you" thing.)

If anyone can give me as much advice and proof as possible it will all help :) Thank you.

Edit-- Another question I forgot to mention, about a month ago when she made us (just the girls) fill out an application form at the same time she pretty much pressured us to sign a contract looking thing explaining that we're working on commision 40/60 and that when we make over 30,000$ a year we have to sign ourselves as self-employed, but yet she knows we don't have clientele and she knows we are just starting out in the business, the contract seemed more or so for employees with clientele, not us junior stylists in training will this effect the reporting at all?

Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 05:19 pm offer- TAKEN

This is...a bit odd, but humor me.

I have a stack of recepies. Old ones. Yellowed paper covered in (usually) pencil cursive. A food stamp application, with a peanut brittle recipie on the back, dates from November of 1976. This collection came with a rack of spice jars I wanted, but now I can't help but think these old, yellowed pages might be a neat art project. They might even be good recipies!

Every time I go to toss them in the recycle, I hesitate. I Just. Can't.

So... does anyone want them?

A silly name, but apt, as there's a story behind the ribbon I used.  Oprah was my commencement speaker a couple of years ago, and she handed out books tied up in ribbons to each graduate.  I kept the ribbons because they were pretty (didn't find the books particularly fascinating), and decided to use one of them for this rose.

It looks like it's attached to the headband, but actually, it's attached to a no-slip alligator clip, and I just layered the headband on top of that for effect.

High-waisted wiggle skirt I made for myself. It's thick jersey and quite simple, two darts in the front, 4 in the back.

Do you lovely folks have any tips on picking fabric that you're sure will have minimal bobbling? I particularly have this problem with jerseys which sometimes bobble just from light handling, even before the first wash! I don't know much about fabric properties so what should I look out for?

The gas station has long been abandoned. For some reason, one of those old coke machines is still there, still working, and still stocked. A beacon across the darkened parking lot, you find yourself going out of your way to investigate, one hot summer night. To your surprise, the price is 50¢. You buy a drink, and can’t tell whether you’re enjoying the flavour or the nostalgia. You excitedly tell your friends but months later, when they finally make the trek, it’s gone.
