Dammit. I promised myself I would make an art post each week. I guess better late than never.
I am sick sick sick. Children, fucking disease factories the whole lot of them. Grumble grumble. Can't swallow, can't breathe, can't really do much besides blog. So I had better make myself useful.
Here is a quick one before I pass out in a pile of my own mucus.

Internets, meet Asia Wong. She is a performance/public intervention artist currently living in New Orleans. Possibly? Probably still? I actually don't know much about her.

I could blog about that website I just linked to and it's contents for miles but I wont cuz I am sick and lazy. I will make you discover is for yourself. It is super fun anyway.

I really enjoy her "Wreckless" project. I think it is one we can all relate to. Here is a quote from her project description regarding "Wreckless".

" In Zooey, by J. D. Salinger, there is a moment when Franny is at home on the sofa having a nervous breakdown, wearing her robe and petting the family cat and Zooey says to her, “I mean if you're able to go into a collapse with all your might, why can't you use the same energy to stay well and busy?” He takes it back in the next breath, says, “All right, so I'm being unreasonable,” but I’ve always thought that was a perfectly reasonable thing to say.
     A lot of my friends are battling depression. This depression is entirely logical. There is a lot to be depressed about: the privatization of our public spaces; the disappearance of imagination from everyday life; the almost instantaneous co-optation of the subversive into mainstream consumer society. Not to mention global warming, the depletion of our natural resources, and impending world war.
     What is there to do?
     Wreckless is about reclaiming public space, about using your imagination, and about recontextualizing the tools of commodification into expressions of individuality.
     And Wreckless aims to do this all with a measure of joy.

I believe she is most well known for her 300 Letters project.This project is her extremely random way of creating intimacy among strangers. She penned 300 love letters to people she knew or kind of knew or wanted to know, attached them to the OUTSIDE of envelopes and addressed them to strangers. She then made this highly amusing and synesthetic website for them. Go ahead, browse for days, it is incredibly satisfying in a voyeuristic kind of way.

Hey internet. I like art. Do you? How would you guys feel if I posted about art?

See, I rummage through the internets like a hungry bear looking for art to devour on an hourly basis. Currently, I have 26 tabs open of art that I have been looking at this week. (No, I NEVER turn off my laptop. Yes, I am sure this is bad.)
So I was thinking that if I started telling you about some of the art that's running through my fingers I would feel like I could move on and close these tabs without feeling like I'm erasing all this ART from my memory. Make sense? Maybe this arrangement will prove mutually beneficial? So here goes.... ART! (Please feel free to ignore me if you want to.)

First up:

Natalie W. Cheung - Photographer (Washington, DC.)

Nicknames: Thrasher, Natalie Fucking Cheung or just plain N.F.C
Point of interest: She digs fractal qeometry. I am excited about her because she also works in cyanotype.
What she has to say about that: "The cyanotypes allow me to devise a situation that allows nature to put it's own hand into creating the drawings."

FEATURED ARTISTS:

Pippa Bartlett – Again and Again (textiles and soft sculpture)
When we hear the words again and again, they often bear a weight of monotony and frustration. We live in a culture that glorifies innovative products and ideas but clings to the comfort of tradition, seeing repetition and routine as both advantageous and detrimental. Again and Again seeks to capture this contradiction, pulling its inspiration in part from Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem of the same name.

Emily Comeau – 2 Ply (textiles, papercraft and soft sculpture)
2 Ply is a commentary on disposable culture and our fascination with the handcrafted in a time in which nearly everything is manufactured and mass-produced. By exploring the patterns and form of toilet paper through the old-fashioned and time-intensive media of papermaking and traditional quilting, this work attempts not only to examine the place of the handmade in post-industrial society, but also to highlight the surprising beauty in everyday objects we tend to overlook.

Stewart Fanning – Untitled (drawings)
Fanning holds a BFA from NSCAD University and is involved in the Animation Program at Concordia University. His current drawing work is heavily inspired by nature as well as detailed, scientific representations of the natural world such as topographical maps and study drawings of aquatic organisms.

In keeping with the show’s motifs of meticulous skill and unlikely combinations, Gutstrings seamlessly blends classically trained cello with quirky indie pop vocals and hiphop-inspired beats, looping and sampling. The result is both beautiful and bouncy, danceable and entrancing.

Oh wow.
I would like to thank everyone who came out to celebrate Nuit Blanche with me. It was fantastic. Thank you all for being so supportive. I hope I actually managed to see you and speak with you when you came out. It was crazy time in there and I ended up spending a good deal of time NOT in my venue. My bad.
I will post more thoroughly later. For now I just wanted to express my thanks to you all for coming out.

Note to self: Stop bleeding all over your homework.

So, here we sit. 26 hours left before the sit hits the fan.
Word up, white embroidery on white fabric is hard! Needles are sharp, fingers are fragile, blood is terribly red and white is so hard to keep clean. I am so happy someone invented tide stick.

Come hell or high water (today I fought the high waters, paper making and all... tomorrow I guess comes the hell part.) school is over for the semester in 65 hours. Huh, it sounds like a lot of time when I put it like that. Too bad most of that time is taken up with work and classes.

Gagh, the next 24 are gonna suck.

I promise that there will be a huge picture post in 65 hours. I hope that I have something to show for all of my work soon enough.

I hope I don't get fired today.....

If they sit me down for a talk I hope I'll be able to work afterwards instead of having an panic attack (like I did yesterday after our talk...)

I hope I can cope with being fired from a job I love in the only field I am qualified to work in....

I'm not asking for comments. I know you all think I am sexy. I know you want to cheer me up. I know you want to tell me about YOUR day. But I'm not really interested in listening to you.

I suck and that hurts and I'm feeling pretty lousy this morning.

Aw man, nature ruined my morning!

Here's the back story:
Well, the morning began full of sun and such so the cat and I decided to spend it on the deck. So, Decibelle (cat) and I got all dolled up to go outside and out do our morning LJing together. She in her leash and harness, me in my bikini and heals..... but when I stepped onto the deck I noticed a gray fluffy ball under the table on my neighbours side of the deck. My first thought was stray cat because the gray fluff looked ratty. Now, I'm one of those types that as soon as they see a stray cat outside they immediately begin imagining their life with a new kitty to love and care for. So my reaction was more like STRAY CAT! Yes I am a crazy person who is always on the cusp of Cat Lady....

I quickly shoed Decibelle inside and shut the door. I think she suspected something because early on because even though she had been crying at the door all morning she just sat in the doorway when I opened it without coming outside.

So, my own beloved kitty safe, I went to investigate. As soon as I had I gotten close enough to peer over a deck chair and see it's face, it's incredibly MASKED face, it started growling. This wasn't any kind of growl, this was a hate filled "I'm a gonna cut you!" kind of growl. I think I actually Eeeped when I scurried inside with my knees shaking. Holy cow folks, there is a LARGE and ANGRY RACCOON on my deck!!!!! Country type Nova Scotian raccoons are scary as hell, I am shitting myself thinking that this big city fella must be 100 times meaner. I think I half expect him to be packing heat.....

So um... now what do I do?

Guys! I NEED your help, advice, guidance, etc.....

Lacking in girlfriends tonight (as well as boyfriends) I am in need of SOMEONE to help me pick the perfect ensemble for my work party tomorrow night. You all know me to be the vulnerable and indecisive type, so I've taken a few photos and you get to pick! (If you want to).

Hey, everybody likes pictures, right?

The deal:
My work party is kind of big, hundreds of guests kind of big I suspect, and the theme they chose (yes, they chose a fucking theme like a prom or something) is "The Red Carpet". I would LIKE to think they mean "dress like a celebrity" and I can just throw on some sweatpants, sunglasses, a baseball cap and leave my undergarments at home...... but I'm pretty sure what they INTEND is for us to dress all fancy like and shit. Like a STAR or something.
There will be booze and there will be food and I suspect plenty of awkward moments with bosses and such.

On with the show!

First up
As it IS a Christmas party I feel that sequins is finally appropriate attire.

Simple, black , one piece. Light jersy (t-shirt material). Dropped waist. Cowl neck, can be worn to the front or off the shoulders.

Also Christmas themed... red and green ensembles! Here is a cotton halter/ wrap around number. Racy!

How about something simple? A nice satin and lacy top with a modest yet well shapped skirt. Complete with or without dead bunny accessories! So versatile!

Was that one too dressed down for a "red carpet" event? More sequins you say?

While were talking crinoline here.... have a look at my collection! This number has "christmas" written all over it. Hepburn styled with it's deep back and high front, this black velvet early 60's attire is accentuated with satin bows at the neckline and center back! Adorable!

Also poofy but without crinoline, this candy swirl party dress is festive with a capital fuck yeah. Also, I made it myself! Which would explain why the zipper is black and there is no hem.....

Er.. on a more modest note, I have this cute "little black dress". Made from a heavy jersy, it's very comfortable and warm but still stylish! The asymetrical and large collar campliment the short and poofy sleeves. Pretty cute, no? But is it too casual?

And last but not least... how about something gold for a change? This sleek and fitted number has a HUGE neckline. Dipping well beyond decency in both the front and the back, when paired with a little black band type bra it transforms into "racy yet still appropriate". Also of my own making (and also hemless, I fucking hate hemming) this number may be a bit too risque for the workplace, no?

Ok folks, that's what I have to offer. You have 12 hours to advise me... GO!

..... I am still so tempted to show up in jeans and a cardboard cut out of a star glued to an oversized sweater.

"Gardening" job.....

Follow up to last entry regarding the gardening job guy who wanted to see my portfolio....

In response to my email:
Yes, I have a portfolio (of sorts) and also many samples of work that I have done. My artistic background is mainly textile based. As I applied for a gardening job I'm interested to hear what you have in mind for someone with my skill set.

He wrote and I quote: (bolded comentary provided by yours truly)

Well Emily, to answer your question, it would be ..."gardening"! (What the hell kind of gardening does this quatation marked "gardening" suggest?! Sketchy)

I presently have someone working who is a student in english literatrure and heading for communications. Its not so much that one has to be an expert in gardening, that's my job, but rather someone who has the right attitude to do whatever needs taken care of when requested to do so. Hopefully a quick learner who does not need much supervision. Presently I am offering 4 hours from Monday to Friday a.m.'s.

There is another problem, maybe and for you to decide, and that is that even though I have had women work for me and even though they have shown me that they don't mind (their just one of the guys), there are no bathroom facilities. (SERIOUSLY?!) So if one gets the urge to go, its behind the fire exit door next to the garden type of thing. (Wh-what?! Any building that has a FIREDOOR EXIT should have a BATHROOM, right? Or have I been living by unreasonable standards?) By now you've probably read enough and are concentrating on your next textile launch :) (You betcha, although I still resent you jumping to conclusions about my character...oddly enough)

If your still interested and the guy I presently have doesn't work out, I'll send you an e-mail. Otherwise, good luck in your endevours.

By the way, if you are interested in using me/business as subject for your photography while we are working on the properties (without posing but just shooting while we are active) that would be cool. (SURE! I'll stand near the piss pool of a fire exit and capture portraits of inhumane working conditions, indecent exposure and urination on city property) Also, can you do a family portrait? We have lots of pictures but no nice family portrait. It would be me, wife, and two boys ages 4 and 6. And if you do, what would it cost etc.
(I'm not really qualified or equiped to do that kind of work anymore sadly and at this point I have lost all interest in talking to you.)
